Unlike silver amalgam fillings, white fillings are glued or bonded to the tooth. This means that silver fillings often require more drilling of the tooth so that they are locked in place to prevent them from falling out. White fillings are bonded to the tooth, so they often require less drilling and preserve more of the natural tooth. Compared to silver fillings they can help to hold the tooth together making it less likely to chip and break. White fillings are also easier to repair and refurbish in the future.
